Since my PhD, I have been conducting transdisciplinary research combining population genetics and evolution of microbial pathogens integrated with molecular epidemiology using cutting edge technologies and analyses. During my PhD I studied population genetics of Legionella pneumophila that led to develop molecular epidemiological tools to address relevant public health problems.  I further developed this research niche when moving to tuberculosis (TB), increasingly addressing evolutionary and ecological questions that contributed to public health. I have co-authored articles which have considerably advanced in the knowledge of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) genomic diversity, origin and evolution where one of the main findings was the first MTBC strain isolated from a wild chimpanzee reported and showing that the general view of the genetic diversity of MTBC was limited at that time. We also have demonstrated that MTBC caused human disease before European contact in America and it was caused by the ecotype M. microttii. Other of my main research lines have been combining genomics and immunology, including my recent article in which we demonstrated for the first time the role of genetic diversity in tuberculosis immunogenicity. I have collaborated in other lines of research, always related with microbial pathogens, such a Hepatitis C genetic virus genetic analyses and metagenomics of the skin. I have an extensive publication record considering the stage of my career with 44 manuscripts published in per reviewed journals. In addition to publishing in high-impact journals (e.g. Nature, Cell Host and Microbe or Science), several aspects of my scientific work have been picked up by the general media.  I have received two prizes for my work on my PhD thesis and also my postdoc.  I have presented my work in 20 congresses. I have been invited to oral presentations in prestigious research centres and international conferences. Finally, I am reviewer for journals such as Nat Com, Epidemics, Inf Gen Evol,  and Tuberculosis, and also projects for the French Nacional Science Foundation y la Agencia Española de Evaluación. I have seven years experience teaching at bachelor and master level and I have co-supervised two master thesis and supervised one master thesis and two graduate thesis. Currently I have funding from three research projects, two of which I am the principal investigator and one I am part of a consortium.
